Fame does not a good interviewer make
Thoughts on the 2026 Golden Globes nominations, and other hyperfixations
The Golden Globe nominations are out (see the list of nominees here), so obviously I have a few thoughts:
Let’s get this out of the way: I haven’t seen every movie or show nominated this year. I’ve never had the desire to do so. And in the big scheme of things, awards shows are not the final arbiters of taste. HOWEVA, I’m a sucker for pop-culture discourse.
Go ahead and give Sinners and Frankenstein, aka two of the best movies I saw this year, all of their things. I really hope Ryan Coogler takes the win for Best Screenplay; not only would he deserve it, but it could go a long way toward encouraging Big Hollywood™ to support creators making original stories. Can’t wait to see these two films go toe-to-toe in the costume/makeup/visual effects categories at the Academy Awards.
Since we’re on the topic, you mean to tell me that none of the female stars of Sinners scored a nomination? Not even Wunmi THEE Mosaku? A TRAVESTY.
I don’t really mess with Paul Thomas Anderson movies, ESPECIALLY since I watched Phantom Thread (2017),1 so I haven’t been in a rush to watch One Battle After Another. And tbh, I’ve only heard white dudes rave about this one, yet reviews by Black women (who make up a large portion of the main cast) have escaped my radar. Leave some links in the comments if you know of a Black writer who reviewed One Battle After Another so I can calibrate my expectations if I catch it on streaming.
Nominating those two new original tracks from Wicked: For Good for best song was… a choice.
Despite how much I love the song “I Lied to You” from Sinners, Ludwig Göransson is going to have a hard time topping the juggernaut that is “Golden” from K-Pop Demon Hunters, a certified BOP.2
Circling back, give Ludwig Göransson his things for the Sinners score. It’s not hyperbole to say he’s one of the most prolific TV and movie composers of the last decade. Just check out my man’s credits. Ludwig could compose the Jurassic Park score, but could John Williams compose the music for New Girl? I don’t think so.
The TV nominations have shown me that I’m far behind on one of my favorite genres: Rich White People with Problems. I need to lay eyes on All Her Fault, The Beast in Me and The Girlfriend.3
So there’s a podcasting category this year, which is fine. But the majority of the nominees are hosted by celebrities or influencers. Fame does not a good interviewer make. Nominee Good Hang with Amy Poehler, however, is a notable exception.
Parker Posey has a chance to win a Golden Globe based solely on her line delivery of, “Piper, NO,” and I can’t be mad at that.
@theindy100"Piper, noooooo!" Parker Posey delivers lines with a Southern twang in The White Lotus season 3 as Victoria Ratliff. In an interview with Today, she revealed how she developed the accent and the words she uses to get into character such as "tsunami" and "Buddhism". This moment has since gone viral on TikTok as viewers are obsessed with how she pronounces these words in the Southern accent. #parkerposey #thewhitelotus #mikewhite #accent #thetodayshow #hbo #tv #trending #fypTiktok failed to load.

Y’all know how I’ve been getting into network television? I’ve discovered another show that has no business being as funny as it is: NBC’s Stumble. This mockumentary sitcom follows disgraced junior college cheerleading coach Courteney Potter (Jenn Lyon) as she tries to lead a group of underdogs at a new school to a national championship. NBC used the draw of guest star Kristin Chenoweth4 to get viewers to the pilot episode, but this is definitely Jenn Lyon’s show (complimentary!). Stumble hits the right campy notes, starting with the names of the colleges at which Courteney teaches: Sammy Davis Sr. Junior College5 and the unpronounceable-to-the-characters Headltston State Junior College. I’m a fan of how actor Jarrett Austin Brown adds depth and Black boy joy to his portrayal of Dimarcus, a showoff former football player at Sammy Davis Sr. Junior College6 who joins Courteney on the cheerleading squad at Headltston.
I’ve started exploring the world of YouTube channels that I can leave on for my dogs, Dolly and Patch, when I leave the house. My current favorite is Snoopy Chill Beats in which that rascally Peanuts pet chills around the house with some seasonal lo-fi beats in the background. I’m not gonna lie — I keep these videos going even when I return home. Jury’s still out on whether Dolly and Patch enjoy the channel.
Categorize this one under “Ashleé’s Always Late to the Party:”7 In recent weeks, I’ve watched The Naked Gun (2025) and The Piano Lesson (2024). The former was a surprising delight that paid homage to the original film8 while making some inspired new choices. The latter was a beautiful adaptation of an August Wilson play that honored the Black American experience.
This is the time of year when I put on my favorite Spotify holiday playlist, “Brown Liquor Christmas.” I gathered this collection of Christmas soul songs that would go down with a nice glass of good bourbon (or eggnog!). It’s a public playlist, so give it a listen here.
Don’t even get me started on that movie. I mean, Maya Rudolph, you OK, girl? But I will give P.T. his credit for reigniting my love and appreciation of Christian Dior.
For me, “Golden” is as queer-coded as “Let It Go.” I said what I said.
Sight unseen, these shows also appear to be in the subgenre Rich White Women in Distress. Nicole Kidman is FANTASTIC in this category.
*clears throat* AND GOOOOODNESSSS KNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWS…
This makes giggle every time I hear it.
*giggles*
Literally AND figuratively!
When I was 9, you couldn’t tell me that Liam Nielsen’s The Naked Gun wasn’t the height of comedy.

Would I love “I Lied to You” as much if I didn’t picture the whole scene?
But “Golden” is stuck in my head constantly, without having seen the movie.
I need Good Hang or the NPR podcast to win. Good Hang brings me joy. I was sad my favorite podcast, The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers podcast, didn’t get nominated. Akiva Shafer, one of the Lonely Island trio, directed the new Naked Gun movie.
